Who is Patrick Drummond? Where does he live and what does he do?

My name is Patrick Drummond. I have been based in Cape Town, South Africa for the past 10 years. I am currently working as the head of account management at Apex.

You’re originally from Durban in KZN – what is the most significant difference between your home town and Cape Town, the Mother City?

Although both are coastal cities, the vegetation and climates are very different – Durban with a humid subtropical climate and Cape Town Mediterranean style. After the warm Indian ocean, the cold water of the Atlantic, which I’ve found a whole new appreciation for, can take some getting used to.

How did you find your way to Apex?

I was two weeks into a new job with a financial services provider when I received a call from one of Apex’s co-founders who was looking to recruit – so the initial timing was unfortunate. But two years of staying in touch kept a door open and ultimately lead to my transition into the team. It’s an opportunity I have been extremely grateful for and consider it my best move yet.

What gets Patrick Drummond up in the morning?

Exercise and caffeine. Sometimes a tidal pool swim fits perfectly in between. Beyond that, I love knowing I will be heading into a stimulating environment, alongside innovative and energetic colleagues who are all working towards a common goal.

How do you spend your time outside of the office?

Out of the office, I enjoy a range of hobbies – cycling, running, surfing and golf to name a few. Weekends are dedicated to spending time with family and friends and tuning in to sporting fixtures. Nothing quite like a victory for the green and gold, 53 laps around Monza or a Sunday at the Masters.

What would you be doing if you weren’t delivering our signature customer service?

Probably staring through the window of a supercar showroom. Jokes aside, I am a 4-wheel fanatic – all things modern and classic. I would love to be a part of a Formula 1 team either based at the factory working on R&D or set in the hustle of race weekends and the season. I also dream of a career in aviation as I have always had a keen interest in flying.

What do you enjoy most about
the Apex team culture?

The positive energy and team approach. We work hard and constantly push one another to improve, but we also take time to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures. The end of the week always comes together with a Castle!

What does a week look like in the account management team?

No week comes without a new set of challenges. Addressing and resolving these involves working effectively and closely with our talented teams from operations to sales, development and digital marketing, on a daily basis. Maximising each account in line with their business objectives and requirements remains a top priority. Weekly plans are put in place enabling us to pay attention to execution and still provide us with resources to manage the regular flow of ad hoc requests.

How do you balance working from home and the office?

Personally, I enjoy the flexibility of being able to work remotely and the opportunities this approach unlocks. It gives you a platform to establish your individual work-life balance. However in saying that, I go into the office most days as I feel more connected interacting with my colleagues face-to-face.

You mentioned that you’re a big fan of success story novels. What has been your favourite read and how has it impacted the way you work?

“Start Something That Matters” by Blake Mycoskie is easily one of my favourite biographies. The book was brought to my attention by a friend who was moved by the Toms philosophy: For every pair of Toms shoes sold, the company donated a new pair to a child in need. This inspiring read encourages me to ensure my work has a constructive and positive impact on our partnered brands, the people I work with, and the company I work for.

What would you say to someone taking an account management role for the first time?

Be eager and up for the challenge of learning from both the successes and the failures. Understand the client’s needs and stay aligned with the strategy and objectives as they evolve. Communicate effectively. I believe this is key to building long term relationships, trust, respect, and good customer service. It goes without saying that I am still learning this too!
