Apex Humans

Learn more about the special humans in the Apex team.

Who is Courage and what does he do?

Well, my name is Courage Chiringa, however, my friends call me ‘Coge‘ or ‘Hopefool‘ because I am a fool for hope, always looking on the brighter side of life. I am a dreamer who believes a good attitude, hard work and always having hope or faith in life will help one to be successful even though it might seem impossible.

I currently stay in Claremont and my role within the ops team mainly focuses on the daily operations activities; making sure all WhatsApp accounts and competitions are running smoothly, sending all client WhatsApp outbound messages and ensuring that all SMS are sent on time. I also help with reporting, client competition queries and supporting the operations team overall.

What gets you up in the morning?

Honestly, just knowing that my efforts and job makes a huge difference in so many people’s lives, although a few cups of coffee do help as well. I am constantly learning every day sharpening my problem-solving skills in the different projects I work on daily which keeps things interesting.

You joined the Apex team just over a year ago, what has your experience been like working flexibly from home and the office?

My experience has been nothing short of amazing. The Apex team is what makes the whole process beautiful. I had support from my first day, the culture in our office is big on growth which helped in building my confidence to work remotely.

Where would we find Courage when he’s not at work?

Always looking for another mountain to conquer or a harder hiking trail with friends. When I am not looking for the thrill I am working with Tribe Sober to help people reduce their alcohol intake and fundraising for the Earth Child Project.

Tell us a bit more about Tribe Sober and what inspires your charitable work with them

Tribe Sober is a community of beautiful people that support each other to reduce their alcohol intake or to quit alcohol completely. There is a problem of alcohol abuse in our societies which has destroyed many lives. Tribe Sober’s aim is to help in reducing the problem while making sobriety cool.

What I love about Tribe Sober is their ‘Dry January’ challenge in partnership with the Earth Child Project. Participants give up alcohol for 30 days and donate R250 or more to support kids from Lavender Hill and Khayelistha. Allowing them to practice yoga and learn life skills.

This project is close to my heart because of the impact it has on the kids. They get mentorship, learn about the environment, are taught to respect their bodies and the initiative also creates a place of peace where the kids feel safe. I am inspired by their efforts to uplift others and paying forward.

What do you find most rewarding about working at Apex?

The team culture is infectious. I love how motivated I am to learn more and see my contributions to projects being valued and trusted.

What does a week look like in the operations team?

The week for the Ops team is never the same however it always involves making sure campaigns, competitions and client accounts are running effectively. That all the outbound WhatsApp and SMS are sent for clients according to their schedule. We also help clients with training, updating all accounts leaflets and attending to all client requests. We are also responsible for reporting and data analysis. It’s a lot, but the team always shows their appreciation and oftentimes clients do too!

What advice would you give to someone entering the operations/IT space for the first time?

I think they need to be open to learning, making sure to ask a lot of questions. They need to be focused, paying attention to detail at all times. Making sure to invest time in learning or studying the latest technologies. Above all for me they need to love the processes of working in an operations team, which can be boring to some. Mentorship is important so find someone in the industry of choice that will help with their life lessons and experience!

How would you describe the Apex team culture?

It is a good but playful environment with highly motivated individuals working towards the common goals of success. Apex culture fosters the growth and development of all employees by assisting us in further learning – I am currently doing a Bachelor of Science In Information and Technology, the support I have been receiving is great working on projects that aligns with my studies.

How would you describe Apex in one sentence:

An agile, customer- centric and innovative organisation.
